Episode 19: Antagonizing The Wildlife

It is the 4th Day of Winter, and the new pasture area is now closed off to the outside. Work is designated to start filling in the under area of the pasture with dirt, mostly for cosmetics sake. Cleaning is still being done around the fort. By the end of this episode, the gnomes are hoping to have all the seeds and other plant parts off the ground and stored in proper stockpiles. While all the work is still being done, Trickstur goes ahead and starts moving the yaks from the old pasture to the new one, and makes room in the valley for new constructions.

The gnomes working outside the pasture soon spot a honey badger. It seems to be minding its own business, but they make sure to keep an eye on it, in case it decides to attack. Instead, someone (who shall remain nameless, mostly because I'm not entirely sure who), decided to get frisky and attack the honey badger. The badger immediately defends itself and bites the gnome, causing it to bleed and run back into the base, honey badger right on their heels.

There was a call to sound the alarm bell during the fight, but due to some poor mismanagement, every gnome thought someone else was supposed to ring the bell in case of emergency. Fortunately, the soldiers were able to hear the commotion in the valley and were able to reach the combat before any major injuries could be inflicted on the population.

Everything quickly returns to normal after the quick skirmish. Floors are being cleaned, dirt walls are being constructed, and Jabba gets to mining further down into the earth to hopefully find some gems or metals, maybe some new stone colors as well.

As it passes midnight on the 5th day of Winter, a monitor lizard shows up at the front of the gates. Gravewalker and Wolfa are in their beds, but the alarm is set to be rung as Sophie runs out to kill it by herself. The alarm is actually sounded this time now that priorities and responsibilities have been properly distributed. The alarm doesn't need to be sounded though, Sophie easily kills the monitor lizard without so much as a scratch.

To end the episode, Jabba finishes the long tunnel at depth -7, and at the very end...he finds...sapphires! Finally, the kingdom has gems in its possession! Finally, truely valuable trade goods can be made and traded to neighboring kingdoms for precious resources and animals.

Episode 20: All That Glitters

It is the 5th day of Winter, and there is a problem with the armor situation for our soldiers. Currently Sophia and Gravewalker are missing a few pieces of armor, even though all the required armor pieces have been crafted. It seems Xzen and Zefrine have been conspiring to join the army, as they have taken the new pieces of armor and equipped them for themselves. I assume it is because the pieces were made as Sophia and Graves were sleeping.

In anticipation of the next goblin raid, work is suspended on the new pasture area to prevent the goblins from getting in a back door or gnome civilians being caught out in the open. Once the next raid has been dealt with, work will resume in (hopefully) safety.

At the end of the last episode, some sapphires were found in Jabba's exploratory tunnel down in the depths. Today, work is started on creating the gem workshops so that the gems can be converted into valuable, expensive jewelry.  Jewelry in gnomoria is ridiculously valuable as a trade good. One ring can often be worth dozens of pet rocks or other similar trade goods.  The hope is that the next merchant will bring more valuable metal ores and some new animals in the trade caravan that the kingdom can trade for. Eventually the merchants will be bringing a steady supply of silver, a valuable trade metal, and tin, which is needed for bronze. Bronze is much more powerful and durable than simple copper items.

Work is also started on creating workshops for engineering and invention. The gnomes have heard tales of magnificent inventions being created throughout the lands, and they are anxious to test their minds and ingenuity. Zefrine seems the most inclined to tinkering and so volunteers to be the first engineer. In her off time from tinkering, she will also be doing the gem cutting and jewelry making.

With the success of finding gems, Jabba sets to work mining out a much larger area down in the depths. Hopefully he can find a few more gems, and of course some more metals down in the depths. The farmers and woodcutters of the fort are keeping occupied hauling items from the depths up to the proper stockpiles, but are also starting work on replacing the floors in the great hall to add a bit more decoration to the area.

To end off the episode, Balburse, the ambassador from the Childlike Twine, has noticed the prosperity of the kingdom and has demanded that she has a more oppulent room to live in during her visit. If we want to keep trade going between our two nations, we will have to add more value to her room.

Episode 21: The Wrath of Wolfa

It is now the 7th day of Winter, and the goblins still haven't raided yet. The gnomes are starting to run a bit low on food, but are waiting for the next goblin raid to be defeated to go out and forage so that civilians don't get caught out in the open. Once the goblins are out of the way, the gnomes plan to forage as many apples as possible to carry the food stocks into Spring, when the farms and groves start growing again.

A tinker bench is set up to allow Zefrine to start tinkering. Rumors have reached the gnomes that there are many amazing devices being developed in neighboring regions, and we want to discover those devices for our own uses as well. Also, Balburse, our ambassador from the Childlike Twine, is still asking for a more valuable room, so Talon is tasked with building a couple more statues for her room. The hope is that the increased demands will lead to more valuable resources being brought by the merchants.

In the evening of the 8th day of Winter the goblin raid that we've been expecting finally arrives. Four goblins start pounding on the door to the tower while Gravewalker and Wolfa are training. The alarm is quickly sounded to warn the civilians and to wake Sophie to join the fight.  Without waiting for Sophie the rest of the Foolish Howlers rush in to engage the goblins before they can push into the tower. Within seconds, Gravewalker rushes into the battle and beheads the goblin raider, dropping the first of the four goblins. Graves lets out a shout at the goblins, taunting them to attack him. While distracted Wolfa goes berserk on the goblins, assaulting them with a flurry of punches, kicks, and even bites. The remaining three goblins quickly fall to her unrelenting blows.

With the goblins dispatched, the outside of the fort should be safe, besides an occasional wild animal roaming the outskirts of the map. The civilians rush out to start foraging the trees while Trickstur gets to work turning the goblins into delicious sausages, and then into sandwiches.

To reward the soldiers' great work in defending the civilian population, work is started on creating a second floor for the defense tower. The goal is to eventually house the soldiers within the tower itself, to prevent them from being too far away from the action whenever a raid arrives.

To finish off the episode, Sophia grabs a quick and easy kill of a monitor lizard that happened to be a bit too close to the fort. Free meat and leather will never be turned down around this fort! Also, BK starts working on creating a third set of armor in anticipation of the Spring gnomad wave. Hopefully the gnomes will be able to recruit another soldier into the army.

Episode 22: The Choker of Deer

It is now the 9th day of Winter, and everyone is asleep. Whether from the exhaustion of overwork, or the laziness of boredom has yet to be determined, but the majority of the fort is sleeping. I believe the gnomes are starting to finally get comfortable in their new home. After a year in the fort, things are finally starting to feel like home.

For a while things have been randomly thrown around so that things would work, but it is time to start looking at efficiency and looks. Jabba is set to carve out a new food preparation and storage area connected to the great hall. This will be the start to moving our industry workshops to a more permanent location rather than sitting out in an open field.

A merchant from the Childlike Twine arrives and sets up shop at the market stall. We were hoping that she would have Tin and Silver Ore for sale, but it seems the kingdom is not quite to that point yet. She does, however, have a breeding pair of emus available for sale, and a fair amount of Copper Ore for sale. The gnomes trade off the new jewelry and some of the trade goods sitting around to obtain those items and set up an area for the emus to graze and breed.

After looking at the tower construction, the engineers have decided that it needs to be slightly larger to accommodate the sleeping quarters on the second floor. The goal is to house and feed the soldiers in the tower itself so that they can quickly respond to any threats to the kingdom by being close to the entryway of the fort. Think of it as a barracks of sorts. Work is started to move the buildings around the tower to new locations.

At the end of the episode, XZen creates a legendary monitor lizard statuette, The Choker of Deer. When asked how the came into being, XZen just smiled a knowing smile and changed the subject. It is the first legendary item constructed within the kingdom and XZen is praised for his crafting skills. It may be the first constructed legendary item, but hopefully it won't be the last.

Episode 23: Towering Expansion

It is the 10th day of Winter. Spring is just around the corner and the gnomes are anxious for the weather to warm up and for crops to grow some more. Work is continuing on the tower expansion. We previously built it as an 11x11 structure, but recently decided that a 13x13 tower will be slightly better. Work is also started on the terrace below the new pasture area. The plan is to set up the butcher, the leather worker, and the bone carver on the terrace so that they will be near the pastures, which will be the source for much of the work.

With the coming of spring, the gnomes will have to be extra vigilant to keep food stocks from getting overly large as mants will start to scout the area and possibly try to steal our food stocks and in the process attack and kill our gnomes. Also, building work will start to slow as crops once again become ready to harvest. The gnomes' first priority is to harvest the trees and crops, and building will come in second. It is a fine line to walk between having enough food to feed our kingdom and having too much to attract mants.

Episode 24: Population Influx

It is the 12th day of Winter, and it is only five hours away from Spring! The gnomes have been anxious to get the farms and groves growing again, and they are hoping word of the kingdom has spread enough to entice more gmones to come join the fort. Word has reached our gnomes about a new discovery in distant lands of automatons, robotic creatures that will do the bidding of the gnomish creators. Hopefully Zefrine will be able to unlock the secrets to their construction quickly. Work is coming along rapidly on the tower expansion, but with Spring here building work will most likely slow down as the farmers and woodcutters return to their fields.

Just after sunrise on the 1st day of Spring, four gnomads arrive to join the fort! Everyone please welcome Padric, a soldier; Deafmints, a new Stone Carver; Kyliarty, a backup Farmer; and Jezzi, a dedicated cook for the fort. Motion has had his job modified so that he will be able to concentrate on brewing while Jezzi will concentrate on making the meals for the fort.

BK has done a great job getting the third set of copper armor created so Padric is able to jump right into soldiering duties with a full set of armor (minus boots) to keep him protected. The gnomes have already been able to fend off goblin raids easily, but adding a fourth member to the army will help ensure that at least one or two soldiers will be awake and in position for any upcoming raids.

The new walls for the the tower have gone up and work is started on replacing the flooring back to where we want them. The goal is to put Basalt blocks around the edge of the floor, Apple Wood planks in the center for the Training Grounds, and Chiseled Marble for the rest of the floor. Work is also set for Jabba to clear out some new areas for Personal Quarters for the new gnomads. The dormitory is still in place for overflow, but the new gnomes still deserve some personal quarters.
