Mining tips and guide?
« on: December 26, 2012, 06:32:50 PM »
So, I've been playing for a bit now and I just reach the main area for caving but so far I've only been strip farming. So what are somethings to help me mine better or more efficient in a cave system? Things I should do and don't. And what is the easiest way to mine and cave? Thanks.

Other posts have explained it before.

1) stairs down
2) place a torch near the stairs.
optional: if you dig deep you can also make a stockpile for a few torches
3) dig a long tunnel 1 square wide and 20 or more long.
4) dig side tunnels every 3rd square on each side.
5) place torches to remove the darkness. You can assign a key in options to show Darkness.
repeat until you find a seam of ore you want.

Optional: Make a 1 square stockpile with high priority for the ore and fill it to 64 units.
Then remove that stockpile designation. One gnome will carry those 64 units in one trip.

Once the seam is exhausted you can deconstruct the Torches and fill back the empty tunnels or at least block them with Build > Wall > any stone.

Underground monsters will only spawn in the dark, so never leave a single square dark. (Go into Options and hotkey "show darkness" )

There is also a trick to see the features of a level before you mine it.

1. Go one level above where you want to mine.
2. Select "dig ramp down" on a wide area.
3. Everything in red is either a cavern or an ore, because it's not possible to "dig ramp down" into a cavern or an ore.
4. Cancel the "dig ramp down" scroll back down to the level you wanted to mine.
5. Mine in the direction of the "red" squares you noticed before.

This isn't cheating, since you never know what the red square means. But it's a good way to have some direction when you mine.

Iron is only found -50.

For efficient level mining use 13x13 rooms with a torch in the centre for maximum coverage. I'd say just mine out the whole rooms and stick a torch in the centre but there's always the possibility that a future version of Gnomoria might include stress cave-ins from unsupported ceilings. This setup when lit up leaves zero darkness for nasty things to spawn. :)

Here's a small image for concept. :)

I've not tried to see if 15x15 works but I think you end up with dark corners with that. :)

Well, you end up with a lot of unwanted stone and a lot of mining work if you do it like that. My technique is:
digs out  1x9 squares from the central torch in all 4 directions
Place a torch at each endpoint
continue from each torch in all 4 directions
If you find ore, dig that out. if not, leave the stone where it is (if there is an ore vein, you will find it with this technique, no need to mine all that stone in between).

Of course, this needs more torches. But torches are basically free.
