Ahhh ok, I had forgotten there were pillars, good tip. I also never built axles yet so that also confused me. Good job combining materials creatively... it's like working with stairs and fences in Minecraft.

Had about 20 gnomads just before the season changed, the only survivor was a miner on level -2, it was funny to watch about 30 gnomads crush the last couple of goblins (well, when they weren't running about like headless chickens)

what is the ideal soldier/worker ratio? goblins seem to kick my soldiers teeth in (I'm scared to go too deep into the mines because I don't want golems to kick my teeth in)

It really depends on how you manage your settlement. Some people organize strong, regualr armies almost equal to the workforce (mostly revolving around supplying said army), others have token group of guards and rely on settlement design (long open corridors with crossbow- or gunmen stationed above) or traps. Some plain isolate the settlement totally from the world and just wait till the invaders sort themselves out.

My kingdom fell :(

I'm guessing the size of this mant raid is because I had a great hall worth 17k? (I built it before I read there was a cap on the amount of gnomes you can have haha)

I'm not sure if there's an ideal ratio, but whenever I get gnomads I always check their skills, there's always some that have 20+ skill in either hammer, sword or axe and not very good working skills so I set them to be my army. So far i've always had like 7-8 squads (I keep them on 2-men squads for training reasons, so 16 military gnomes) and I've not had a problem yet, I keep them on my only entrance training 24/7 with a crate of bandages nearby.

Nice idea with the round shape.

I'll stick to square stuff myself though, building round things would drive me crazy ;)

Just dig a hole next to water and it will flow into the new hole. The bigger the new hole is the lower the water level gets. But over the time the rain will fill it up back to the limit.
About the drowning. Remove all ramps into the lake, so the gnomes cant enter it and will not drown.
Keep your lake away from training grounds and battle areas. In fight gnomes can be punched over the edge of the lake and will drown then.
