Help and Guides / Re: Red Zone Under Workshop??
« on: November 19, 2012, 12:51:10 AM »
I like to place my workshops in 5x5 areas and then surround them with a stockpile that accepts only what they make. I also make sure no other stockpile accepts those goods. I then place crates in these stockpiles and when something is made it is transfered to the stockpile pretty quickly. When the stockpile is full the workshop fills up too and production stops.

The new Craft To option on workshops sort of makes this way of doing it obsolete but I still store extra goods this way. I'm a little OCD when it comes to knowing where things are.

I'd hardly say it's obsolete, the "craft to" and storing the materials nearby mesh very well together. My only problem is later on when I have a shop crafting many hundreds of items, my haulers may not get to them in time and so my brewer ends up idling around awhile while the haulers get around to clearing his shop.  The next step I've taken from there is to just have more shops set up. Like claptrap said, a game of possibilities.  :)

Hello! Blacksmiths do not need any special equipment like miners or woodcutters do. So you don't have to worry about that. Besides any possible bugs, Other things I could think of are if your blacksmiths have higher priority jobs they are performing. If you're using a custom blacksmith profession, they may have another job selected that they are working on?

Clicking through random names on my first game brought up Land of Hugs. I kept clicking through though, but that probably would have been good for that peaceful game. :D

I had to cull my herd earlier today, and I wasn't even keeping that many of them.  I had 2 males and 8 females in a pasture, and had another pasture set up to take any extras so I could easily eyeball how many I needed to slaughter. The amount of milk littering the ground and not wanting to take my gnomes from hauling more important things got to me and I brought their numbers down. Haven't tried any slaughterhouses though, I find the pasture mechanics easy enough to handle population.

Knowing that RoboB0b wants to continue to add complexity to the crafting recipes leads me to believe that this will come one day. As it already is though, I see the issue being that even more higher quality food will lead to adjustments being made for all food.  If a sandwich currently keeps a gnome fed for a day and a half, how much better would the cheese and meat sandwich be? Some of the other foods like eggs or fruit can't go down too much lower, otherwise the poor gnomes would be stuck next to the strawberry crate most of the day.  As it already is you can build up massive surpluses of food when you start making nicer quality meals more often.
