I like to place my workshops in 5x5 areas and then surround them with a stockpile that accepts only what they make. I also make sure no other stockpile accepts those goods. I then place crates in these stockpiles and when something is made it is transfered to the stockpile pretty quickly. When the stockpile is full the workshop fills up too and production stops.
The new Craft To option on workshops sort of makes this way of doing it obsolete but I still store extra goods this way. I'm a little OCD when it comes to knowing where things are.
I'd hardly say it's obsolete, the "craft to" and storing the materials nearby mesh very well together. My only problem is later on when I have a shop crafting many hundreds of items, my haulers may not get to them in time and so my brewer ends up idling around awhile while the haulers get around to clearing his shop. The next step I've taken from there is to just have more shops set up. Like claptrap said, a game of possibilities.
