General / Re: Gnomoria v0.9 released - Beta

I'd love to see a tutorial getting implemented during the Beta stage. I've seen a few people cry out for one, and lord knows I need one when I come back to the game after a few weeks of being away :)

I'm 95% sure I know the reason for this issue.

The save file uploaded to the issue on the tracker contains 13,421x dirt clumps and 36,088x raw stone lying on the ground. Having that many items will most certainly cause an 'Out of Memory' error. If you guys are able to get back into your games, try getting rid of large clumps of items using the Market Stall when a trader is there, then save, then reload the game and see if that helps. After I removed the aforementioned items I didn't have any trouble or long wait loading and playing the game.

The Wiki is down. I don't think it could handle your epicness.

Excellent work.

The Workshop Template's first draft is now complete and usable. Have a look at it: http://www.gnomoriawiki.com/wiki/Crude_Workshop

If you ever want to change the way it looks on a workshop page (which you're more than welcome to do), you only need to change the template itself, and it will change on all pages it's used on.

Nice job. You've done a tremendous amount of work for the Wiki already, and we all appreciate it very much.

I went ahead and made a rough draft of a Workshop template here: http://www.gnomoriawiki.com/wiki/Template:Workshop

It's not done yet. Still need to get it to float to the right, among other things, but you get the idea. The templates INSIDE the Workshop Template (Template:Log, Template:RawStone, etc.) are placeholders for the images you made. This way it'll be easier to simply put the word {{Log}} into the Wiki, and your image will pop up in its place. Makes things easier down the road. The catch is, this system expects every item to have an image for it (though not completely required - the word "Crossbow" would certainly suffice for a while until the image template is made and can be replaced by {{Crossbow}}. Are you - or anyone else - up to the task?

EDIT: Here's what those image templates would look like: http://www.gnomoriawiki.com/wiki/Template:Log

And you can see the final result now in Template:Workshop. See how there's an image of a log? If you view the source of that page, you'll see "{{Log}}" where the log should be. Hence the usefulness of templates :)

PERFECT rough draft infobox. I assume that you're eventually going to make it a template, and an actual box, though?

Here's an example: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Template:Food

And some others: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Infobox_templates

By the way - how are you getting those images so easily? Are you pulling them out of the default.png tileset from the Gnomoria folder and Photoshopping out the pink? That's what I started to do. I'm a low-grade shopper though. I imagine there must be a better way.

I went ahead and updated the Butcher Shop page, and was thinking of using it as a template for the other buildings. Anybody have any comments on how the general design could be improved first?

I'll probably start updating the other building pages late tomorrow morning, around 12 hours or so from now.

Nicely done. I'd love to see an infobox template in the top-right with quick, important information about each Workshop. You already have a starting graphic (though not optimum, as it's a big picture and no one new to the game will know what they're looking at) Crafting requirements, value, etc. Perhaps a "Raw Materials" section to list what it takes in, and a "Manufactures" section to list what comes out? I see you already have the latter in the "List of Products" section, as well. What are your thoughts on doubling up on information?

Example Infobox (pretend the following is in a nice-looking table with column(s):

Butcher Shop
Value: x
Requirements: 1x Table, 1x Chair, 1x Knife (Would love to have graphics to show this a nice visual way)
Raw Materials: Corpses, Pastured Animals
Manufactures: Meat, Hide, Bones, Skulls

EDIT: Perhaps something even simpler than Raw Materials and Manufacture: "Input" and "Output"?

Sounds good to me. I'm asking Kinsi how she got some of her graphics. The only easily accessible graphics I've seen are in the default.png tilesheet within the Gnomoria folder.

Kinsi, I was hoping you could tell me how you made the Workshop graphics for your TechTree (in the "Getting started for beginners" section). I'm looking into spicing up the Wiki's graphics a bit, and all I have to go with is Photoshopping the default.png tilesheet in the Gnomoria\Content\Tilesheet folder.

Are you saying you'd have each workshop have its own page instead of items, or both?

You might be onto something. Rather than focus on individual items, which may take more time, focus on the workshops themselves and how to craft them/what their requirements are. Then, of course, list the items they're capable of making with short summaries of each item. Perhaps have the items in their own small infobox within the Workshop page they're made in.

This is the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I'm liking the idea of focusing on the Workshops moreso than the individual items themselves. Less work, equal effect. The items will still be searchable in the Wiki, they'll just show up in the Workshop that created them. Or better yet, for example, the "cloth bolt" page would redirect to the Loom page, as that's where it's created.

Any other thoughts?

I would create an account myself and just start making changes, but I don't want to step on your (or Merry's) toes.
This is one of the things holding me back as well, as mentioned in my OP. I envision this site as easy to browse as something similar (with regard to the number and uses of items/crafting) to Minecraft's Wiki.

For example: a single page for each item that uses the "Item" infobox template (which I don't think exists yet, but can easily be borrowed from the internet) that describes Value, Workshops that build it, Workshops that are needed before building it, stack size, etc.

The same can be done for NPC mobs, with things like Toughness (perhaps Minimum Required Armor Level or something of the like, as mobs don't have health bars) spawn locations, group sizes, etc.

Then, with all items in their own page, we categorize them. We can have categories like the ones in the game. Soil, Stone, Wood, Metals, Gems, etc. as subcategories within the larger "Items" category. I've done something similar to the Miasmata Wiki's Plants page. Every item in the game would be listed on the bottom, just as all plants in Miasmata are listed. And at the top there are subcategories to get more specific and find what you're after a little easier.

Furthermore, if an item is deleted, it's easier to deal with just deleting/un-categorizing that page as opposed to removing its mention across several pages the way the wiki is set up now.

Another reason why I believe the Wiki should be simplified. That way, big updates like 0.8.25 won't force contributors to change the same data over multiple pages.

darkhog's suggestion for a tutorial is dead on. Many people don't have the patience (or knowledge) to Google YouTube videos or Wikis to learn the game themselves. Easing that process from within the game is a requirement of any developer that wants to expand the number of users on his projects.

However, as Gnomoria is still in Alpha stages, and RoboBob is only one man, I completely agree that an in-game Tutorial should be low on the priority list until development smooths out.

Excellent points from everyone here.

I can see how the "Crafting" page would be a nice overall view of the process, especially with the detailed diagrams provided by Somnium.

However, when I look at the Items, Economy, and Materials pages, I see these easily combining into a single template similar to Template:Items.

In Gnomoria's case, I imagine Categories like:

  • Raw Materials
  • Manufactured
  • Food
  • Drink
  • Agriculture
  • Tools
  • Weapons
  • Armor
  • Mechanisms

Again, I'm not trying to promote Minecraft in any way, but it's similar to Gnomoria with regard to itemization, and that Wiki is extremely well done. There's zero shame in using what works for someone else and tweaking it to work for us.

I'll end this post with a question: If I get a surge of motivation and want to dive into rewriting a massive part of the Wiki, possibly removing/moving large sections for the sake of organization and information efficiency, would that be acceptable to the Gnomoria community?
